Embrace The Maxi Dress This Season

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The hot trend for maxi dresses is still going strong for spring so this is less of a trend alert and more of a fashion reminder. Here at Designer Desirables we love this look and it signals to me the beginnings of holidays and hot weather glamour. It’s beachy yet classy, fun yet totally appropriate for where ever you are going, especially in the sun.

This year’s maxi dresses feature animal prints, graphic digital prints and floral effects. Maxi dresses can go from breezy bohemian chic to show stopping summer style, for the most casual cocktails to the most fabulous summer wedding.

Maxi dresses are statement making pieces all on their own. Add some weather appropriate shoes (high wedges are my fav), a few shimmering accessories, and you’re set to go.

If it’s cold, you could easily pair a maxi dress with a nice cropped jacket or colourful wrap. Maxi dresses work best with gladiator sandals, flip flops or heels.

The maxi dress has become a wardrobe staple – as the A -list have proved. If you ever needed inspiration the SATC ladies worked the maxi dress look perfectly on their trip to Mexico. Another very good reason to start embracing spring the arrival of the new SATC movie, can’t wait!

Golden Globes Best-Dressed!

Monday, January 18th, 2010

So, it’s not only blighty that has awful unpredictable weather, it RAINED at the Golden Globes in L.A last night and, shock horror – some A-Lister’s even held their own umbrellas. Now, as big as this news was – we were far more concerned with the award winners, and of course most importantly, the dresses. See below our pick of the best red carpet starlets….

Emily Blunt in Dolce & Gabbana

It was romance that ruled the night with Emily Blunt’s pale rose strapless Dolce & Gabbana number being my number one look. The actress channeled luxurious feminine glamour and was the epitome of red carpet elegance. Emily finished off this dreamy look with a pair of sparkling diamond cuffs and a Ferragamo silver clutch bag.

Anna Paquin in Stella McCartney

Although she lost out in all 3 categories Anna Paquin sparkled on the red carpet in a gold Stella McCartney gown with a plunging neckline. Anna also gets our award for best accessory, giving her glamorous dress an edge with an Alexander McQueen, skull clutch.

Penelope Cruz in Giorgio Armani Privé

There was of course a stylish array of classic black gowns on offer. Penelope Cruz (holding her own brolly) wore a lace dress by Giorgio Armani Prive that featured a dramatic beaded neckline, horizontal ribbon striping and fitted sleeves. A true Hollywood goddess Penelope accessorised with some 69 carats of Chopard diamonds… we can but dream!

Ginnifer Goodwin in Vionnet

This year’s ceremony also saw a trend for short dresses, I’m still not sure about for this style for major awards shows, but Big Love’s Ginnifer Goodwin looked uber chic in an electric blue draped Vionnet cocktail gown. Vibrant and youthful this is an age perfect outfit!

This years awards was easily the dressiest and soggiest I’ve seen in a long time…. I am now very excited for the Oscars!

Looking Through The Lens At Body Confidence

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Designer Desirables have just recently moved over to live models from mannequins, and one of the first stumbling blocks was where do we find the models, and what size should our models be?  One thing we knew for sure, we wanted a selection of REAL WOMEN not size zero models.  Our models range from a UK 6-8 to a UK 12 and are all from the North of England.

Caroline Size UK 12

Cassie is a svelte UK 10 and has maintained her natural figure after her gorgeous boy Charlie who is 3 in March.

Cassie will be joining the Designer Desirables team soon, as our in-house model, buyer and editorial manager.

Erin Size UK 6-8

Erin Size UK 6-8

Erin is our UK 6-8 model and is naturally this size.  Erin is currently studying a masters in International Business and hates the maths part of her course.

One of our biggest discoveries from using real women in our clothes was finding that manufacturers are out of touch with sizing for real women today.  This is a concern as we all know what women and girls are like when it comes to label size, and often when we have to go up a size our confidence can be knocked.

At Designer Desirables we want women to feel confident and sexy in all of our garments and our sales team will be able to help you with real sizing in all our garments.  Many of our ball gowns have had to re-sized from size UK 14 and UK 16 down to a size UK 12, not only is this unhelpful for Designer Desirables and our valued customers, but women have a resistance to buy a size up simply because we want to be skinny like the models we see in the magazines and celebrities who are size zero.

birmingham-gok-wan

HOWEVER!  After watching Gok Wan’s How to Look Good Naked we are in full support of his petition calling for a body confidence lesson to be included in all school curriculums. Please click the link provided and support this fabulous petition.  Currently it is the fourth most popular on the Number 10 website so everyone needs to try and get this petition to be number one in order to get noticed.

During the show a magazine commented that they find it difficult to use real women models because the manufacturers will only give them size UK 8 clothes for their photo shoots.  Conversely we believe that they have the power to ask for a bigger size or to use a different manufacturer for a shoot that will give magazines reasonable sized clothes for real women to wear.  There is always room to negotiate so why aren’t magazines trying their hardest to focus photo shoots at real women?  It’s real women who flick through their shiny pages every week?  They have the power to use real women models and get the right sizes for photo shoots.  We can do it as an e retailer so there is no excuse for the magazines!

Body confidence and using real women as models is something we feel very strongly about here at Designer Desirables therefore you have any comments please post them!  Lets not stop here in our fight to get real women in magazines and as models, we all need to do it together!
